FAQs

What can go in the compost?

We can accept fruits and vegetables, pits and seeds, dairy, seafood, egg shells, coffee grounds, loose tea and spices, meat and bones, bread and dough, hair and nail clippings, cut flowers.

We cannot accept any plastic, pet waste, “compostable” products, paper products, diapers and feminine products, metal, glass, or rubber, medicines, cigarettes, grease, oil, or bulk liquid, or any other non-organic materials.

If you have any further questions about what can or can’t go in your bins, don’t hesitate to reach out! If we regularly notice contamination (trash) in your bins, we will contact you about it and we’ll work together on a strategy to eliminate opportunities for contamination.

How do I sign up for compost pickup?

Go to the “Subscription” section of our website, and choose residential or commercial depending on what you are looking for. Choose the amount of receptacles you need from the drop-down, click “Subscribe” and check-out! Then, you’ll get a call from us to set up the logistics!

How do I determine the number of bins I need?

For households, we would advise collecting all of your food scraps for one week as a test, to see how much waste you are typically generating. If you need help figuring it out, or for commercial accounts, call or email us and we can help! For residential pickups, we provide standard 5-gallon buckets and for businesses, 32-gallon rolling bins.

I need help signing up - what can I do?

Call or email us! Or, come see us at the Rooster’s Roadside Creamery farmer’s market in Elizaville, NY on Sundays from 11-3.

What day will my compost be picked up?

We currently do pickups on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Your location will determine what day you get assigned to, and we will contact you to arrange this after you subscribe! Our pickup days are subject to change occasionally due to holidays and/or extenuating circumstances, but we will always notify you if your pickup will be delayed.

Where will my compost bin live?

During the week you can store it wherever it makes most sense to you! Ideally it should be in a convenient location near your kitchen for ease of use. We will contact you to work out the best spot for pickup days after you subscribe. Many households put theirs by the curb like any other waste receptacle, and in most cases that makes it the easiest for us to pick up. Most commercial pickups can stay in place all week, so long as we can easily access the spot with our truck.

Can I get a compost referral bonus for friends?

We are working on a Compost CSA referral program and will have updates soon!

In the meantime, have a bunch of friends who want to compost? We also have a community drop option for neighborhoods - sign up with at least 5 neighbors (6 total houses minimum) and the host’s house is free! Neighbors will pay only $14/mo. Contact us directly to set up a neighborhood pickup.

What if my compost didn’t get picked up?

Although we will always do our best to be perfect, we are still just humans - if we’ve missed a pickup, please don’t hesitate to give us a call! Or, contact us through the website, there is a drop-down option for “Reporting a Missed Pickup”!
